Kansas City Data Center 1102 GRAND Reviews Cloud Computing Technology Strategies

I would be willing to bet if you asked ten people what their definition of cloud computing technology is, you would probably get ten different answers. There are a number of reasons why this is the case and there are quite a few levels to understand. There are a number of ways we are seeing our clients at 1102 GRAND develop their cloud strategies. The two we have seen to be the most popular are:

1) Clients have their own private cloud, utilizing their infrastructure that physically resides in private rack or cage space at 1102 GRAND. Some are building out their private cloud for internal uses and others are offering private cloud as a service to their customers.

2) Clients are developing a hybrid cloud approach, utilizing private cloud for their sensitive information and using the public cloud for other data.

I ran across an article, “Forget Public Cloud or Private Cloud, It’s All About Hyper-Hybrid,” by Thor Olav of CIO, that dives deeper into the hybrid approach.

Cloud is certainly not a one size fits all approach, and each company will have to decide what will work best for their overall strategy. 1102 GRAND Keeps On Growing

As some of you may have heard or seen, 1102 GRAND is experiencing considerable growth within our collocation business. We would like to thank our existing and new customers for their ongoing business and support as well as all of our friends in the community that keep sending new companies our way. As a result of the growth, 1102 GRAND has been building out data center spaces non-stop this year, and this will continue for at least six more months. The first phase of the 9th floor is scheduled to open November 1st, and is already fully leased. In addition, the 5th floor that opened October 1st has just three cages remaining. This past week our crews started work on another 8500 square feet of caged collocation space that will be completed Q1 2012.

Greg Elliott, director of business development at 1102 GRAND, said that collocation growth has come from a wide range of industry verticals. “Heavy growth is coming from hosting and cloud providers as well as continued demand from healthcare IT companies. In addition to regional customers, the trend of east and west coast customers looking at Kansas City for more affordable data center solutions is contributing to the expansion,” said Elliott.

Apple is everywhere, especially this week with the tragic passing of Steve Jobs and the release of the iPhone 4S. Even our hometown wireless provider, Sprint Nextel, will finally have the iPhone available mid-October. Phil Poje and his new company, Tech Orchard, recently launched into the Apple game as well. Phil has always been a great proponent of 1102 GRAND and we are excited to hear about his new venture. I had a chance to catch up with Phil this week to ask him a few questions about Tech Orchard and why he chose to start a business in the Kansas City Area.

Tell us about your new company.

1102 GRAND, Kansas City’s Data Center & Internet Hub Reviews the Big Data Industry

As I read the article, In the Pipeline: A Tidal Wave of Data, I started thinking about how much data I generate on a given day. I send tons of emails and texts, make pandora selections, tweet, post on LinkedIn, make charges on my debit and credit cards, utilize smart phone apps, make calls…well, you get the idea. Then I look at my children, who are better multi-taskers than I am, doing online homework from their laptops while simultaneously texting friends and downloading apps on their iPads. It is obvious that we will continue to generate more data, especially with the availability and affordability of increased internet capacity and speeds.

In the article, James Kobielus of Forrester predicted that storage will continue to increase at a more affordable cost, thus gaining my attention. He said, “By the end of the decade, petabytes of storage will live in the palm of your hand.” A blog post from Mozy.com in 2009 did a great job of illustrating what a petabyte looks like: 1,000,000 gigabytes equals a petabyte, or 13.3 years of HD-TV Video!

It will be interesting to see if Kobielus’ prediction comes true, but one thing is clear, more data is coming and we better be ready.

Google may have to hurry to book room in fast-filling Internet hotel

A principal at what he says is Kansas City’s only Internet carrier hotel routinely hears the same question: Is Google coming to 1102 Grand?

The more appropriate question might be: Who’s not coming to 1102 Grand?

Although he would welcome Google Inc., 1102 Grand LLC co-owner Darren Bonawitz barely has time to utter his “no comment” refrain to inquiring customers because of the company’s booming growth.

The company, which provides carrier-neutral, or public, data center space in a 26-story building in downtown Kansas City, matched its record 2010 revenue numbers in the first six months of this year.

Kansas City Data Center 1102 GRAND Reviews: How Future Technology Will Change the World

10 technologies that will change the world in the next 10 years

As computational power rises exponentially, not linearly, so does the rate of change — and that means the next 10 years should pack in far more technological change than the last 10.

Disruptive technology is, by its very nature, unpredictable, but it is still possible to look at the work being done by R&D labs around the world and see clues as to what the future holds. That’s the full-time job of Dave Evans, Cisco’s chief futurist and chief technologist for the Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG).

At Cisco Live, Evans outlined what he believed to be the top 10 trends that will change the world in 10 years. Here is his list, with commentary augmented by yours truly based on interviews in the past year with numerous other industry analysts and visionaries.

No. 1: The Internet of things
We have passed the threshold where more things are connected to the Internet than people. The transition to IPv6 also supports seemingly limitless connectivity. Cisco IBSG predicts the number of Internet-connected things will reach 50 billion by 2020, which equates to more than six devices for every person on Earth. Many of us in the developed world already have three or more full-time devices connected to the Internet when factoring in PCs, smartphones, tablets, television devices and the like. Next up are sensor networks, using low-power sensors that “collect, transmit, analyze, and distribute data on a massive scale,” says Evans.

Such sensors, based on standards like Zigbee, 6LoWPAN and Z-wave, are currently being used in both predictable and surprising ways. Zigbee is being embedded in smart appliances and smart meters. 6LoWPAN (over IPv6) is used by Vint Cerf for his wine cellar climate-monitoring system. Z-Wave is the basis for Verizon’s smart home automation service. But more creative uses are emerging, too. Sparked, a Dutch startup, implants sensors in the ears of cattle to monitor cows’ health and whereabouts. Sensors are being embedded in shoes, medicine like asthma inhalers, and medical exploratory surgery devices. There’s even a tree in Sweden wired with sensors that tweets its mood and thoughts, with a bit of translation help from an interpretive engine developed by Ericsson (@connectedtree or #ectree).

Have you ever wondered where all of the data in the world is located, or how much data is available across the globe? Here is an article from www.thewhir.com which includes an infographic, breaking down the best and most impressive data storage facts.

Data, Data Everywhere!

I came a cross an intersting infographic (below) from Mozy that discusses the amount of data stored worldwide, there are a couple of intersting tidbits and conculsions that can be drawn for this.

- First there are 600 Exabytes of digital data stored worldwide and this number is doubling every three years. This means there will be a Zettabyte of digital data in the world within the next three years. Wow!

- Second, the United States and United Kingdom dominate the worldwide datacenter market with 100% of the 10 largest facilities located in these two countries.

- Finally, old technologies die hard; 11 percent of all data is still stored on tape. With this level of continued data growth, hosting and cloud computing will only become more pervasive.

Data Center Consolidation & Cloud To Be Main Focus of Federal IT Spending

There are have recently been numerous changes in the federal government, including Steven VanRoekel being named the new chief information officer. In the midst of those changes the federal government has decided to make data center consolidation, cloud and security the main focus of its information technology spending. Here is an article from itworld.com about the government’s IT spending decision.

Report: Fed IT spending to focus on cloud, data center consolidation, security

Federal IT spending will be sluggish over the next five years, with the exception of spending on some emerging technologies, a new research report predicts.

“Federal Information Technology Market, 2011-2016”, by enterprise software vendor Deltek predicts “moderate growth in a limited number of high-priority areas,” with overall federal IT expenditures expected to grow less than 2 percent annually through 2016.

Deltek predicts “demand for vendor-furnished information systems and services by the U.S. government” will go to $91.3 billion in 2016 from $84.1 billion this year, an annual growth rate of just 1.7 percent.

Deniece Peterson, Deltek’s senior manager of federal industry analysis and co-author of the report, said, “While the administration is still focused on key cost-saving measures such as cloud computing and data center consolidation, agencies will be under pressure to execute those plans under strict budgets. This means opportunities may be rescoped or restructured as agencies struggle with funding and managing these projects.”

Tell us a little about your organization’s background (name, when founded, and by whom)?
StartKC, Inc. was founded by KC based “serial entrepreneurs” Mark Brigman and Seth Meinzen in the Spring of 2009.

Why was it founded and what is the group’s mission or core focus?
StartKC was formed to provide a city-wide, single point of entry for motivated entrepreneurs who are looking to create or aggressively grow a business. StartKC offers a wide range of entrepreneurial resources targeted to assist entrepreneurs from “idea stage” to the growth of a 100 employee firm.
