I would like to comment on an article from InformationWeek.com, written by Elizabeth Montalbano, highlighting the many IT management challenges facing the Social Security Administration in the near future.
The article is in response to a report by the Social Security Administration’s Inspector General Patrick P. O’Carroll Jr., stating the IT concerns that the Social Security Administration has in the upcoming new year. Montalbano primarily focuses on the SSA’s transition to a new data center from the outdated National Computer Center (NCC). The article also reviews concerns with modernizing business applications and the transition from traditional customer service to web-based.

Click Here to read the full article:
I think it is a safe bet that we all knew that Social Security was in trouble. What I don’t think we realized is that when discussing its collapse, it actually pertained to the physical structure of their data center. Unfortunately, although very scary to consider, the issues and challenges they are facing with regard to their data center infrastructure are not unique. It is not even isolated to the government sector. Many companies are facing similar issues with their existing privately owned and operated data centers albeit at different levels of scale.
Companies need to step back and take a look at the big picture and carefully evaluate all of the options. Just because owning and operating a data center made sense in the past, it does not mean it is the best solution going forward. The requirements of the business itself may have changed and certainly the alternatives available have whether it is collocation, hosted environments, cloud services, or a hybrid solution.

Thursday, December 30th, 2010
Thank you David Twiddy, staff writer for the Kansas City Business Journal, for featuring Darren Bonawitz, principal of 1102 GRAND, in recent article: Bonawitz is wired into IT scene. According to the article, networking and personal connections has helped Bonawitz thrive in the data center industry.

It’s a November evening, and the Press Bar and Panini Grill in downtown Kansas City is packed with IT workers, tech entrepreneurs and a smattering of angel investors.
Some are looking for jobs, some are searching for business partners, and others just want to learn more about the depth of local tech companies.
Darren Bonawitz stands near the center of the action, raffling off iPads and flat-screen televisions, thanking the event’s sponsors and then diving back into his favorite activity — introducing people.
As a founder of KCNext, the organization hosting the “happy hour,” Bonawitz long has enjoyed expanding tech…

1102 GRAND Reviews Proposed Net Neutrality Plan
Friday, December 3rd, 2010
Posted By: Darren Bonawitz
This article written by David Lieberman from USA Today explains a proposal from the Federal Communications Commission. The proposed plan would “preserve the freedom and openness of the Internet.” Critics and Internet supporters have been discussing the issue of net neutrality. This proposal has received both support and criticism.
Plan could charge some users higher Internet fees
People who spend a lot of time watching videos or downloading files from the Internet could pay higher prices as part of a controversial proposal that Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski unveiled Wednesday.
He will ask the five-member regulatory agency to vote on Dec. 21 on rules that he says would “preserve the freedom and openness of the Internet.” President Obama has said that protecting what’s known as net neutrality would be a top goal.
Genachowski said that his proposal would bar “unreasonable” efforts by Internet providers — led by cable and phone companies — to help some services and hurt others. For example, providers couldn’t provide smooth and uninterrupted transmissions for communication services that they own, and jittery or delayed transmissions for competitors such as YouTube or Skype.

Darren Bonawitz of 1102 GRAND Endorses New Landings, a Kansas City Area Job Club
Friday, November 26th, 2010
Posted By: Darren Bonawitz

When we were at the Kansas City Area Development Council’s (KCADC) annual meeting a couple of weeks ago, Greg and I caught up with several friends and met some great people. One such group we had the pleasure of being introduced to is New Landings, and I wanted to make sure people were aware of this organization.
While things appear to be better with the economy than they were a year or two ago, I know that there are still many people looking for a job and many others who are still at risk. If you are out of work or know others who are, please check out their information and be sure to share with others. http://www.nljc.org/

1102 Grand Featured on Datacenterjournal.com
Friday, October 29th, 2010
A recent press release describing 1102 GRAND’s successful work with FishNet Security was posted on Datacenterjournal.com. 1102 GRAND, Kansas City’s data center and Internet Hub, created a case study focusing on the money it saved FishNet Security.
Barry Cooper, vice president of education services for FishNet Security, was grateful that 1102 GRAND was able to help him improve his products and save money. “What I needed was a solution of scale. Now, we have a Remote Training Environment (RTE) that can deliver 60 different vendor courses and computer-based training with pre-recorded content delivered to customers. It is all hosted from 1102 GRAND. With the development of the RTE, the customers did not have to wait, and the company reduced its overhead by $140,000 a year. Along with decreased shipping costs, the machinery breakage costs also decreased,” said Cooper.
