The topic of “green” data centers is more than just a fad or marketing gimmick – it is a matter of real dollars. For even small to moderate data center footprints, the dollars saved by being more energy efficient can really add up quickly. Here’s a post by Greener Computing that is right on the mark: To Green the Data Center, IT Has to Feel Some Pain –
Power is probably the single biggest operating cost, besides payroll, for many data center environments. Keep in mind that we are not only talking about the power to operate networking equipment but to cool it as well. Unfortunately, even if an IT executive has a solid grasp of their power draw, from my experience and conversations, they often don’t know how that translates into electric utility costs. Oftentimes the information is not readily available to them due to internal controls, and they are often forced to make approximations if they consider it at all. Organizations need to develop internal strategies to arm their IT executives with the necessary information to make solid operational decisions which hopefully includes making significant strides to become more energy efficient.
It should also be noted that moving equipment into a collocation environment that is energy conscious can be a great way to address issues quickly and cost effectively. Otherwise CAPEX that may not be in the budget may be necessary to implement certain energy efficiency strategies. Furthermore, larger facilities such as 1102 GRAND have far greater ability to leverage various economies of scale resulting in an even greater reduction in operating costs for organizations.

Redundancy. It is the name of the game for companies in the quest for maximizing uptime. We talk with companies of all sizes and across all vertical markets every day, and questions about redundant power and cooling are almost always on the “must have list” as people evaluate a collocation facility. Fortunately, as with many other facilities, 1102 GRAND has invested heavily in the necessary infrastructure to provide this level of service and peace of mind for us and more importantly our customers.

No matter the size of the business or vertical market, protecting data is imperative not only to success but to survival. According to Hewlett Packard, 70 percent of small firms that experience a major data loss go out of business within one year and 43 percent of companies that experience a catastrophic data loss never reopen. Many companies turn to collocation as part of their data protection plan thanks to the increased reliability and likely reduction in operating overhead. When determining where to collocate networking equipment, there are dozens of factors that need to be considered. After breaking these criteria into groups, five emerge: space, power, cooling, connectivity and services. The space portion of the decision making process is critical as it will largely influence many of the other factors to be considered.

Picture this, 98 degrees (feels like 150), the clubs are hot to touch, and you are sweating in the shade. Would you think this is an ideal scenario for a golf tournament? Probably not. But despite the hot conditions, the 1102 GRAND Annual Golf Tournament, had almost 100 participants! We would like to thank our customers, vendors, others from the IT/Telecom community, and Deer Creek Golf Club for making the 4th Annual Tournament a success.
